An exemplary class. There are only good and excellent marks in the diaries. Both the headmaster, parents, and students are satisfied.


But now a new teacher has arrived from Brno. And suddenly everything got mixed up — instead of the usual fours and fives, ones and twos fell on the "exemplary" class. There's a commotion in the town. At the bazaar, child-loving mothers condemn the "evil" teacher. The headmaster is beside himself with rage, and this is no coincidence: a new teacher by the name of Pelikan threatens his career.


Daily clashes with the principal, abuse from parents, ridicule and bullying from students, unsettled personal life — all this weighs heavily on the shoulders of an elderly man who came to a small provincial town to teach children. It's not the marks that bother the Pelican, but the knowledge. No one needs illiterate excellent students. The motherland is waiting for smart, sensible, educated people. And this seemingly simple truth is not understood by many people.


The plot of the new Czechoslovak film "The School of the Fathers" was based on an acute, vitally true conflict between the screenwriters Ivan Krzyzh and Ladislav Gelge. The problems of educating the younger generation occupy a large place in the people's Czechoslovakia: after all, today's children are the future builders of a socialist society. They should not be taught "the old-fashioned way", they should not get used to greenhouse conditions. Only hard work forges the will in a person, gives birth to skill, and gives true knowledge.


No matter what issues are raised in film production — domestic, industrial, or socio-philosophical — a person should always be at the center of attention of its authors. And the success of the painting depends on how truthfully and deeply the character of this person is shown.


The authors of the "School of Fathers" managed to create a number of interesting characters. And the first place among them, of course, is occupied by the main character of the film, teacher Pelican. This is the merit of both the screenwriters and the director, but mainly the talented actor Karel Geger, whose performance impresses with sincerity and real, big truth. Perseverance and courage are indicated not by external acting techniques, but by the deep inner strength of the hero, unshakeable conviction of his rightness.


Unfortunately, there are some miscalculations in the film. The image of the young teacher Andulka Navotnaya (the artist Blazhena Golishova) is pale and schematic. The lyrical line of the film, related to the relationship between Andulka and Pelikan, is very expressionless and looks artificially drawn to the main events. The character of the chairman of the executive committee of Yanoukh (actor Vladimir Glavaty), this endlessly busy father, who does not have time to pay attention to the upbringing of his own son, is stereotypically solved. In addition, the authors constantly create obstacles for their hero, which do not enliven the narrative at all, but rather annoy the viewer with their unreasonableness.


Ladislav Gelge, the director, proved himself to be a subtle psychologist in the film "School of Fathers". Close attention to cinematic details, the ability to convey the smallest nuances of the mental state of his characters — these are the distinctive features of the creative manner of this talented artist.
